august wine

Steven Fromm

traveling to my old man’s funeral
my wife and i stopped at the airport
bar for a pre-flight hit

we flew first class
they served more wine
i was bombed when we made detroit

my brother picked us up
i hadn’t seen him in 20 years
he said: you got old

the hole dug the coffin cheap
we sat in august’s swelter
before feeding dirt into the grave

my brother and i took
one last look at our father
my wife and i skipped the wake
